THE JEWISH LIFE CYCLE
In keeping with our belief that Temple Beth Israel should meet the needs of its members throughout life, the congregation offers many life cycle functions.
Brit Milah: (Circumcision)
This ceremony may be performed either by a mohel or physician. The congregational rabbi offers the religious prayers.
Baby Naming
Our newborn boys and girls are named and blessed at Sabbath evening services as soon after birth as it is convenient for parents and family to attend.
Consecration
This occasion takes place in the fall close to Simhat Torah, when our youngest and newest students are blessed in the presence of the Congregation upon initial entry in the Religious School.
B’nai Mitzvah
The ceremony of Bar of Bat Mitzvah is a privilege available to the children of members of the congregation. The course of preparation involves regular attendance in the Religious School. Students learn to read Hebrew and the prayers found in prayer book. To become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, the standards and qualifications established by the Rabbi and Board of the Congregation must be fulfilled so that a year prior to the ceremony occurs the child begins doing additional work in preparation for this ceremony. However, our Religious School curriculum is developed to end with Confirmation with the expectation each Bar or Bat Mitzvah will complete the program at that time.
Confirmation
This is a group ceremony of young people affirming their commitment to Judaism after a period of study and learning following their B’nai Mitzvah and held on Shavuot.
Conversion
The congregation welcomes anyone interested in beginning the process of study, which can lead to becoming a Jew by choice. Classes are held on Sunday morning when Religious School is in session.
Betrothal Blessings and Weddings
The bonds of engagement and marriage are further strengthened when the couple is married or blessed in the sanctuary of Temple Beth Israel.
Death
Temple Beth Israel maintains its own cemetery and seeks to be of assistance and support to a congregant who has lost a loved one.
