Rabbi Nate DeGroot joined the Temple Beth Israel family in 2019, leading services approximately every other week and on holidays.

Previously Rabbi DeGroot was the Associate Director and Spiritual & Program Director at Hazon Detroit. Prior to his work at Hazon, Rabbi DeGroot was the Jewish Emergent Network Rabbinic Fellow for IKAR in Los Angeles, where he led services, life-cycle events, and worked closely with their 20s-30s membership to increase engagement.

Rabbi DeGroot earned his MJEd from Vanderbilt University, and, following his ordination from Hebrew College in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, he worked as a Jewish educator and leader for child and adult programming, focusing especially on service, social justice, and environmental justice.

Rabbi DeGroot moved to Detroit in August 2019 with his wife Rebecca.

Rebecca Steinman is a Michigan native hailing from Flint, a Spartan, and an experienced Jewish educator. Rebecca also worked at IKAR, serving as Associate Director of Education. This is where Rebecca and Nate met and were married.

Rebecca currently serves as the Director of Education for Dor Hadash, a new Jewish community and family-based supplementary education program in Detroit. Rebecca is also part of Dimension's Jewish Women of Color Resilience Circle Leadership Fellowship and Shalom Hartman's Educator Fellowship.
